Want to build your communication and leadership skills, while enhancing your self confidence in a supportive learning environment?

Since 1924, more than 4 million people around the world have become more confident speakers and leaders because of their participation in Toastmasters. Toastmasters International is a world leader in communication and leadership development. Today,  membership is 260,000 strong. These members improve their speaking and leadership skills by attending one of the 12,500-plus clubs that make up our global network of meeting locations.

You may be interested to learn that TopStart Toastmasters  is at your doorstep and we’re looking to grow our membership. Belonging to Toastmasters in one of the greatest investments you can make in yourself. It is also one of the most cost-effective skill-building tools available anywhere.

How Does It Work?

A Toastmasters meeting is a learn-by-doing workshop in which participants hone their speaking and leadership skills in a friendly atmosphere. TopStart Toastmasters is one of those clubs that forms part of that network. We meet weekly, with a typical meeting lasting between 60—75 minutes.

Members evaluate one another’s presentations. This feedback process is a key part of the program’s success. Meeting participants also give impromptu talks on assigned topics, conduct meetings and develop skills related to timekeeping, grammar and meeting procedure.

Members learn communication skills by working through the Competent Communication manual, a series of 10 self-paced speaking assignments designed to instill a basic foundation in public speaking.

Members also learn leadership skills by taking on various meeting roles and working in the Competent Leadership manual. In our learn-by-doing approach, we don't lecture members about leadership skills; we give them responsibilities and mentoring to help.

Graeme practicing his speech "Guerilla gardening."
Top Start recently held an event at Ake Ake vineyard and restaurant to allow fellow member Graeme Kettle to practice his inspiring speech 'Guerilla gardening,' and to test Martin Macpherson's evaluation skills in readiness for the annual regional competition, held in Auckland.

Needless to say, attendees got to practice listening, evaluation and impromptu speech skills as well. The food, conversation, and entertainment was outstanding to boot!

Notwithstanding, our very own Graeme Kettle came a very close second overall, in the regionals - fantastic result and well deserved.
